This isn't a belief in some higher power, or divine intervention saving me from harm and ensuring my success. No, this belief is even more powerful than that... I believe in humanity. I believe in US. I believe that I can go out into this world with nothing but the clothes on my back and the skills that I posses, and I can not only survive, but thrive. I believe that we are not limited by money unless we choose to be, and I believe that everybody inherently knows that truth. I am setting out into the world with an altered trajectory from the norm. Instead of trying to accrue as much money as I can, so I can have more things to "improve" my quality of life or bolster my future, I want to see how much I can improve my life without money, and bolster my future by improving the lives of those around me. By immersing myself in this alternative way of living, I seek to gather empirical evidence that the alternative is not only possible, but can be an eloquent and efficient answer to many of the issues that are brought up in our current system today.
As Buckminster Fuller said, "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." It is obvious that our current reality is not meeting all of our needs, and since its our reality, we have the power to change it, but we must work to replace it with something better. We are over worked, underpaid, and disconnected from each other. Oftentimes, when we are allowed time away from work, we spend that time celebrating not being at work, instead of cultivating our passions, skills, and relationships. With the concept of an open economy, and a vessel like Mass Mosaic to facilitate its execution, I believe we can change the system and ease some of our economic strains. I believe that this can lead to being able to elect for less working hours, while improving quality of life. I believe that this can instill better interpersonal relationships that will lift the lives of those deprived, and aid us in preparation for any catastrophe or political unrest the future may hold. As a scientist, I feel compelled to test all hypotheses, and my hypothesis is that we are better together.
The thing I love so dearly about science is that it is not about "proving" anything, but disproving the theories that don't work. So, I embark on this experiment with the hypothesis that an economy of tensegrity within community will benefit all of us. Whether my hypothesis will supported or refuted, I don't know, but I will do my best to gather data accordingly, because we have enough data to refute our current system, and it is time to test our limits. It is time for change, and this is where I will gather my evidence.
